MID TERM SUGGESTION

COURSE NAME: ENGLISH LANGUAGE PRACTICE

Mechanical Engineering, 2nd Semester, R2

1.     Short Question (Any four)

a)     Write some features of Productive skill.

Ans: The productive skills are speaking and writing, because learners doing these need to produce language. They are also known as active skills. They can be compared with the receptive skills of listening and reading.

b)    Briefly explain about Ignoring and selective listening.

Ans:

Ignoring: The lowest level of listening is called ignoring -not listening at all. If you are distracted by anything while talking to a user, they get the impression you are ignoring them. For example, while the user is speaking, you start conversation with another IT support tech. you are ignoring your user.

Selective listening: Selective listening is when you focus your attention on some specific information. It is involves consciously or unconsciously choosing to listen to what is relevant to you and ignore what isn’t.

c)     Write about stage 1 and stage 2 in listening process.

Ans: The listening process into five stages

·       Receiving: The first stage of listening process is receiving the speaker’s massage which involves isolating the massage from all other sounds and interpreting what’s been said.

·       Understanding: In understanding stage we attempt to learn meaning of the massage, which is not always easy. For one thing is a speaker does not enunciate clearly it may be difficult to tell what massage was.

·       Remembering

·       Evaluating

·       Responding

d)    How to improve effective listening? Explain

Ans: It can be beneficial to evaluate your current listening skill to determine areas for improvement. Here are some ways to improve your skill

·       Maintain eye contact with the speaker.

·       Visualize what the speaker is saying.

·       Limit judgments.

·       Don’t interrupt.

·       Wait for a pause to ask question.

·       Ask clarify questions.

·       Empathize with speaker.

·       Pay attention to nonverbal cues.

·       Provide the speaker with feedback.

·       Practice listening.

e)     According to Wallace and Beard, what are the purpose of reading?

f)      What are the differences between passive and active skills?

BASIS FOR COMPARISON

ACTIVE LISTENING

PASSIVE LISTENING

Meaning

Active Listening is a process of transforming the thought or statement into a clear message, with full-fledged involvement from the listener's side.

Passive Listening is a process of simply consuming the message, however, there is no involvement from the listener's side.

g)     Illustrate the definition of reading comprehension

Ans: Reading comprehension is the ability to read text, process it and understand it’s meaning. It relies on two interconnection abilities, word reading (being able to decode the symbols on the page) and language comprehension (being able to understand the meaning of the word and statement)

2.     Broad Question (Any one)

a)     Write the definition of listening skill and explain the process of listening with example.

Ans:

Listening skill: Listening skill is the ability to accurately receive and interpret massages in the communication process. Listening is key all effective communication.

Listing process into five stages

·       Receiving: The first stage of listening process is receiving the speaker’s massage involves isolating massage from all other sounds and interpreting what’s been said.

·       Understanding: In understanding stage we attempt to learn meaning of the massage, which is not always easy. For one thing a speaker does not enunciate clearly it may be difficult to tell what was.

·       Remembering: In the listening process the remembering stage occurs as the audience categorizes and retain the information they have gathered from the speaker for future access.

·       Evaluating: The fourth stage of the listening process is evaluating. Evaluation of the same massage can be varied widely from one listener to another. The stages two, three and four are represented the brain because it is the primary tool involved with these stages of the listening process.

·       Responding: The responding stage is the stage of the listening process, wherein the listener provides verbal or non-verbal reaction based on short- and long-term memory.

b)    What is reading skill? Interpret the reading strategies which are beneficial to improve reading skill.

Ans: Reading comprehension is the ability to read text process it and understand its meaning. It relies on two interconnection abilities word reading (being able to decode the symbols on the page) and language comprehension (being able to understand the meaning of the word or statement)

It can be beneficial to evaluate your current reading skill to determine areas for improvement. Here are some ways to improv your skill

Decoding: Decoding is the skill that relies on your ability to sound out you’ve heard but never seen written out. It relies on phonemic awareness which is the ability to hear individual sounds in words and connect the sounds to letter.

Fluency: Fluency refers to mix of different factors. First it focuses your ability to read clearly with flow. Fluency also focuses on your ability to decode new vocabulary quickly while reading.

Vocabulary: Vocabulary is the ability to decode or determine meaning of the new words can also influence your reading comprehension.

Inference: Inference is also a key element of reading comprehension. When we make inferences, we are connecting information from texts our own ideas and opinions that help us identify the meaning of what we read.

Retention: Reading comprehension is typically all about retaining what we read. Comprehension is based on the retention information. By practicing your summarize skills and remembering what you read, you can further strengthen your reading comprehension.

c)     Broadly explain the advantages of learning English Language.
